This is an international workshop held as part of ASEF/Alliance Asia – Europe Annual Workshop Series 2003/04. It is co-hosted by the Center for Social Policy Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, China and the ESRC Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The workshop is funded by the grant from the Asia-Europe Foundation and the European Alliance for Asian Studies. The participants from Britain are further supported by the BA/CASS Joint Project fund from The British Academy, which contributes toward their travel and accommodation costs.
