STICERD Public Lecture

Speaker: John Vickers, Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading
Chair: Professor Timothy Besley
Date: Tuesday 2 November, 2004
Time: 6.00 p.m.
Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building, Houghton Street, WC2A 2AE

How should competition law deal with anti-competitive behaviour by firms with market power? In the light of recent EU and US cases, this is perhaps the most controversial current issue for competition policy. Lax policy would jeopardise the competitiveness of markets, but rigid policy would chill pro-competitive, pro-consumer conduct. The lecture will provide an economic discussion of evolving legal standards of what is abuse of market power.
