The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and London School of Economics and Political Science research collaboration, supported by the Jamsetji Tata Trust, was launched at LSE on 26th June 2007.

The focus of this 5-year research programme has been for the two institutions to collaborate on social science research in areas of mutual interest. The programme has enabled academics from LSE and TISS to organise workshops, seminars and other dissemination programmes at both LSE and TISS. It has provided support for visiting fellowships. The programme has made possible the publication of several books and research papers by academics from both institutions. Some teaching programmes have also been set up.

The programme has been undertaken in two streams, namely, Social Sciences and Health.

The following research themes have been developed in Social Sciences over the last four years and have been led by academics in various Centres and Departments at LSE together with academics from TISS:

  • Business Model Innovation at the Base of the Pyramid
  • Civil Society and Global Governance
  • Colonialism and Welfare: Social Policy and the British Imperial Legacy
  • Democracy and Development
  • Governance and the Governed
  • Population and Development
  • Social Protection, Economic Growth and Social Change
  • Urban Planning & Development
  • Other Research & Activities

The collaboration on Health has been based at LSE Health.
