Inequalities in attainment and experiences are long-established in the state school system in England, but ever-changing, particularly in this era of school disruption. This presentation will use findings from research projects conducted in primary schools to explore the relationship between education policies, concepts of ‘ability’, and the reproduction of inequalities. Research from the pre-Covid era will be examined, with a focus on how educational developments such as datafication and the growth of neuroscience have reinvigorated the idea of ‘ability’ as fixed and measurable, and how this relates to teachers’ classroom practices. This will be combined with the findings from an ESRC-funded project on schools’ priorities during the pandemic and other Covid-focused research to explore the possibilities for the disruption of patterns of inequality in post-pandemic schools.
