Homelessness in Higher Education: Supporting Students in London
Joseph Usher and LSE Housing and Communities
Published 30 May 2025
The LSE’s Homelessness Initiative Activity Fund awarded a grant to LSE Housing and Communities in late 2024 to carry out research, bringing together relevant stakeholders to help universities in London better understand how they can support students who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. This report examines why student homelessness is a growing issue that remains under-researched and under recognised in higher education policy. We highlight different sector specific policies and housing developments that are contributing to and alleviating student homelessness. This report summarises the findings from three strands of work; desk-based research; including a literature review, analysis of existing provision to support students facing homelessness in London; and a roundtable event which took place on 25 March at the London School of Economics, with participation from university staff responsible for supporting students, homelessness charities, and student bodies.
