CASE Social Exclusion Seminars
Social Policies and Distributional Outcomes (SPDO) event: Social Mobility
Abigail McKnight (CASE, LSE), joint with Lindsey Macmillan, Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities, UCL
Wednesday 02 December 2020 13:00 - 14:30
This event will be held ONLINE.
This seminar covers findings from two projects on social mobility which are part of the Social Policies and Distributional Outcomes research programme, which is funded by the Nuffield Foundation. Firstly, an assessment of UK social mobility policy covering manifesto pledges, the work of the Social Mobility Commission and evidence of progress. Secondly, research on recent trends in social mobility in the UK with detailed analysis of differences in upward and downward mobility by gender, education and ethnicity, and their intersections. This research finds stark ethnic differences in social mobility prospects in the UK. Opportunities for upward absolute social mobility appear to be more limited for some ethnic groups; particularly Black African and Black Caribbean men and women. Black Caribbean men and women have lower rates of upward mobility and higher rates of downward mobility, even when accounting for immigration status and educational achievement.
