What drives the wage gap between men and women?
The Economist's Finance and Economics section reports on research about what drives the wage gap between men women. The article refers extensively to research undertaken by Camille Landais and colleagues exploring how the variation in women's fertility impacts the wage gap.
The research looks specifically aat women with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome and examines whether this influences their future wages. The study found that women with MRKH earn much the same as other women and men in early adulthood. Then, in their 30s and 40s, as the wage gap between men and women opens up, the women with MRKH follow a different path. Their wage trajectory is almost identical to that of their male peers.
