About this event
To discuss how the care economy and housing sectors depend on one another, housing expert Anne Power and ecological economist Tim Jackson will be discussing findings from their new books Beyond Bricks and Mortar and The Care Economy, respectively, offering a unique and insightful discussion on the topical issue of housing and the economy. To enhance this discussion, environmentalist Jonathon Porritt will be joining the panel, providing a unique perspective on the ways in which the care economy and social housing can be advanced sustainably.
Tim Jackson (@ProfTimJackson) is an ecological economist and writer. Since 2016 he has been Director of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) at the University of Surrey. CUSP is a multidisciplinary research centre which aims to understand the economic, social and political dimensions of sustainable prosperity. His most recent books include The Care Economy (2025), Post Growth. Life After Capitalism (2021) and Prosperity without Growth (2017).
Jonathon Porritt (@jonathonporritt) is an eminent writer and campaigner on sustainable development. He was formerly Co-Chair of the Green Party (1980-83) and Director of Friends of the Earth (1984-90). He was a Board Member of The Southwest Regional Development Agency between 1999 and 2008. He stood down as Chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission in 2009, after nine years providing high-level advice to Government Ministers, and served a ten-year term as Chancellor of Keele University (2012-2022). Since stepping down from Forum for the Future, Jonathon has returned to actively engaging in campaigning issues with radical climate campaigns such as Just Stop Oil and Defend our Juries. His most recent books include Love, Anger & Betrayal (2025) and Hope in Hell (2020).
Anne Power is Emeritus professor of Social Policy at LSE where she is head of LSE Housing and Communities, a research group based within the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion. She has been involved in European and American housing and urban problems since 1965, including working with Martin Luther King's 'End Slums' campaign, and, on her return to Britain, organised community-based projects throughout London. Her most recent books include Beyond Bricks and Mortar (2025).
Kitty Stewart (@kittyjstewart.bsky.social), who will be chairing the event, is Professor of Social Policy and Associate Director of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE). Kitty’s recent research focuses primarily on the causes and consequences of child poverty, the relationship between income and wider outcomes, and policy for young children. Kitty has published numerous articles, edited book chapters and policy focused papers.
LSE Housing and Communities is a research hub located within The Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion. Research explores the effects of poverty and social disadvantage, particularly from a neighbourhood and community perspective aiming to understand social realities and changes within communities.
