STICERD News:
LSE Research for the World articles by STICERD members

Published/Broadcast 25 May 2023

Research for the World, LSE's social research magazine, features two articles by STICERD members Mary Reader and Michael Callen.

Mary Reader's resarch entitled 'Starting child benefits during pregnancy could help tackle inequality and boost economic growth' focuses on researching the impact of a previous government grant to pregnant women in the UK. She finds that a small sum could lead to significant improvements in babies’ health. Mary is a pre-doctoral research assistant at the Hub for Equal Representation in the Economy at STICERD LSE and has been a research officer at the Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE).

Michael Callen's research entitled 'Paying humanitarian aid digitally can help society’s most vulnerable: a study with Afghan women' has been trialling the payment of aid directly to vulnerable Afghan women through their phones. His findings suggest that digital payments can be an effective and transparent way of helping those most in need. Michael is associate professor of economics at the Department of Economics and member of STICERD.
