Jim Thomas (1933-2024)

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Jim Thomas, a valued member of our STICERD community. Jim passed away on 30 November 2024.

Jim joined the Department of Economics in 1960 as Assistant Lecturer, after finishing his BSc (Econ) at LSE. He came to Economics from a background in Mathematics and Statistics, and his early research interests were in Applied Econometrics. Having taught courses in Applied Econometrics for the British Council in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, he developed an interest in urban poverty in Latin America, leading to research on the urban informal sector. Later in his career, his interests shifted to the History of Economics, particularly the History of Economics at the LSE, which has been his primary area of research since the 1990s.
