Unless otherwise specified, in-person seminars are open to the public. Please ensure you have informed the event contact as early as possible.

Those unable to join the seminars in-person are welcome to participate via zoom if the event is hybrid.

About this event

Criminal justice systems worldwide often fail to act when confronted by victims of gender-based violence. Only 37% of domestic violence divorce petitions were granted by judges in China, with anecdotal accounts suggesting judges often prefer to preserve marriages even in cases of abuse. Can judicial views and actions on gender-based violence cases be changed? We find that following the #MeToo movement, which dramatically changed society’s understanding of gender-based violence, female judges in China are 8 percentage points more likely to grant divorces in domestic violence cases. These results indicate that the views and actions of those in the criminal justice system regarding gender-based violence are malleable.

This seminar series is jointly organized by the IFS, STICERD, and UCL.

IFS/STICERD/UCL Development Economics Work In Progress seminars are held on Thursdays in term time at 14:00-15:00, at the IFS, unless specified otherwise.
