About this event
Developing countries, with their economic centres often situated in vulnerable areas, are expected to face the brunt of climate change impacts. Indonesia faces heightened disaster risks, with floods posing the most significant threat. In this paper, I first establish a link between historical flood events and a decline in regional economic output, deterrence for new business entries, and the erosion of physical capital. I then develop a quantitative framework to assess the anticipatory effects of flooding. The analysis reveals large and heterogeneous losses across industries due to regional flood expectations, though putting flood defenses can help mitigate some of these impacts.
This seminar series is jointly organized by the IFS, STICERD, and UCL.
IFS/STICERD/UCL Development Economics Work In Progress seminars are held on Thursdays in term time at 14:00-15:00, at the IFS, unless specified otherwise.
