About this event

Free universal breakfast schemes have been delivered in primary schools in England for more than 30 years, but evidence on their effects is thin. Using administrative and survey data for disadvantaged primary schools between 2006 and 2024 and a staggered difference-in-differences design, we find modest attainment gains, sizeable reductions in boys' behavioural difficulties, negligible effects on absence, and increases in obesity prevalence. Our evidence suggests that attainment gains are driven by improvements in pupil behaviour and obesity increases by classroom-based breakfast consumption. Our results speak directly to the national rollout of Breakfast Clubs.
