This presentation looks at the issue of transport-related social exclusion (TRSE), which was a concept that was developed in the early 2000s in response to the then Labour government's Neighbourhood Renewal Programme. The `economic crisis' of 2008 and subsequent austerity policies have widened and deepened transport poverty across the UK. With the costs of living set to rise again, this is now an urgent national and local policy issue for many already socially disadvantaged populations. Although transport poverty and exclusion has been well-documented within transport research, it has been largely been overlooked by the UK poverty lobby. Equally, local transport policies and plans do not directly confront the transport poverty issue. The problem is particularly acute in the North of England, especially outside the main urban centres. The presentation will consider the recent evidence for determining TRSE from a pivotal recent report by Transport for the North and the author's own research.
