September 2007: Stratford City, Olympic Park & Canning Town visit

Canning Town Regeneration Projects

Our final call was to Canning Town, one of the in the top 5 per cent most deprived areas in the UK. We were taken on a tour of various regeneration projects in this former dock area by Philip Morris and Shona Pollock of the Canning Town & Custom House Regeneration Project team. Canning Town's housing is 80 per cent local authority-owned, and the plans involve rebuilding parts of the area to create a higher density of homes, and thus achieve a more mixed tenure. 1,700 homes will be demolished (including 1/3 of all local authority homes), and 8,000 new ones built. New green spaces will run through the middle of the area.

Our tour took in the Royal Docks, one of the earliest attempts at mixed-income housing, as well as a new community centre in the New Deal for Communities programme area adjacent to Canning Town, which houses a healthy eating café, multi-purpose hall, crèche, nursery, jobs & training service, doctor's surgery and health centre all under one roof.
