About John Hills

John had a positive impact on so many of our lives and the impact of his work reached far beyond academia, changing people's lives for the better. John was a valued colleague and friend, and in his memory, these webpages bring together his work, tributes paid to him and prizes awarded in his memory.

John joined the LSE in 1986 and played a significant role in STICERD's Welfare State Programme before co-founding the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) in 1997, which he directed between 1997 and 2016. He remained Chair of CASE until his untimely death.

He also co-directed the LSE's International Inequalities Institute (III) 2015-2018. (III legacy page)

John was Richard Titmuss Professor of Social Policy and is remembered fondly as an inspirational teacher by generations of LSE social policy students.

John will be remembered as a brilliant scholar and an intellectual giant who made tremendous contributions to social science. His work has had a major impact on social policy, especially in relation to poverty and inequality.
