About this event

This conference will explore through both theoretical and empirical work the connections between state capacity and accountability and how these two conditions vary by states’ economic foundations.

States are central to economic development, public service delivery, and collective problem-solving, yet their capacity to fulfil these functions varies dramatically across contexts.Building state capacity requires not only administrative and fiscal resources, but also mechanisms that ensure responsiveness to citizens' needs. These dimensions are deeply interconnected: capacity without accountability can enable predation rather than development, while accountability mechanisms require state capacity to function effectively.
