Data

On this page, you can download the original data and files used in the book: the database used in the book, a code book that describes the content of the database and do files that takes the database as input and produces the figures from each chapter as output. If you wish to replicate the maps used in the book you will also need the database for maps.

In 2021 we updated the database, codebook and do files and these are available to download below.

An Index Measuring State Capacity, 1789–2018

This paper - by Colin O'Reilly and Ryan H. Murphy - contributes to the literature on state capacity by developing a method that yields an index of state capacity with far more comprehensive data coverage across time and countries than has been possible previously. Unlike narrower measures of fiscal capacity or legal capacity, the index is more comprehensive, using data from the Varieties of Democracy dataset on fiscal capacity, a state's control over its territory, the rule of law, and the provision of public goods used to support markets.
