Data
One important challenge for constructing measures of consumption expenditures using registry data is to observe and measure all household income streams and all asset transactions (from real estate to financial assets).
This page provides comprehensive documentation and a detailed description of the different registers that need to be merged in order to build reliable measures of consumption in Sweden. It will be useful to all researchers interested in replicating these consumption measures for use in their own work. To this effect, researchers will need to prepare and submit a research proposal to Statistics Sweden, and then order and buy these various registers from Statistics Sweden, subject to some ethical vetting process.
Once this data has been accessed, interested researchers may use our programs and codes provided on this website to build the registry-based consumption measure. Please, if you do so, make sure to reference our work.
Measuring consumption expenditures based on registry data is a complicated task involving many steps. To facilitate researchers' ability to replicate these consumption measures, and to foster interactions and help improve on our existing measures, please visit our page which provides the programs used to build our consumption measure:
LISA/Forvarvskalla | Lisa is the Swedish baseline longitudinal register that contains exhaustive information on earnings, transfers and socio-demographic variables on an annual basis for the universe of Swedish individuals aged 16 and above. Period: 1997-2011 |
Wealth | The Swedish wealth register Formogenhetsregistret comprehensively coverts the asset porfolios for the universe of Swedish individuals. This register contains information on the balance value of all financial assets and listed securities, such as holdings by asset-class, real estate wealth and debt. All financial institutions were compelled to report this information directly to the tax administration for the purpose of the wealth tax. This register ignores non-listed securities. Period: 1999-2007 |
KURU | The KURU dataset contains disaggregated data on the balance positions for all financial securities that are reported by Swedish financial institutions. Swedish financial institutions are required to report the quantity and identification code ISIN of their clients’ security holdings. Period: 1999-2007 |
IoT | The IoT data is the income and taxation register that gives, for the universe of the Swedish population, additional information on capital income and capital taxation. The dataset KIRANTA is included in the IoT register. Period: 1997-2011 |
Vehicle Register | The Fordonregistret allows to connect cars to their owners and includes information on the car’s general status such as the registration date and specific characteristics such as the model. Period: 1999-2007 |
Unemployment Registers | The Handel register provided by the Swedish Public Employment Service and the ASTAT from the unemployment insurance administration (IAF) register contain information on unemployment for the universe of Swedish workers. The Public employment service register covers information on when people register as unemployed or when they leave the unemployment service. The IAF register covers all the payments made to the unemployed and comes from unemployment insurance funds. Period: 1999-2007 |
Employment Registers | The Job register covers information on individual all employment spells, linking each Swedish with his job spells, employers identifier or working place. Period: 2000-2011 |
HUT | The HUT dataset is a yearly household budget survey which provides direct measures of bi-weekly consumption expenditures at the moment the household is surveyed, without longitudinal structure. Period: 2003-2009 |
Belinda | The Belinda register contains information on inheritance for the Swedish population. The Belinda population dataset contains estate report data for the universe of deceased Swedes during the period 2001-2005. The Belinda sample dataset contains very detailed information on assets of a sample of decedents who passed away in 2004 and 2005. The Gåvodatabasen dataset contains data for gifts made in Sweden for 2002-2004. |
