Consumption Project

Programs

Measuring consumption expenditures based on registry data is a complicated task involving many steps. To facilitate researchers' ability to replicate these consumption measures, and to foster interactions and help improving on our existing measures, this page provides the programs used to build our consumption measure.

The programs build on the various registers that are documented in our Data Documentation section. Further details and explanations on the methodology can be found in our paper "Studying Consumption Patterns using Registry Data: Lessons From Swedish Administrative Data".

The programs are provided for Stata users. For any additional information please contact us.

These programs are the property of The Consumption Project Team, and we kindly ask anyone using them for replication or for building registry-based consumption measures for their own work to explicitly reference our work.

The do file "conswe_000_masterConsumption" defines all the paths and important variables, and calls the four following do-files.

The do-files called by conswe_000_masterConsumption perform the following:

  • 001: merges the LISA, Wealth and benefits datasets
  • 002: defines consumption of real estate
  • 003: calculates consumption flows from financial wealth
  • 004: brings the data created by the previous three do-files together and calculates the consumption measures from cons1 to cons6
  • 005: simply removes un-necessary variables and defines the components of consumption such as consumption out of assets and debt
