diagram for developing a plan of action - your theory of change: long term goal to reduce inequality

Long term goal to reduce inequality

The first step is to identify which dimension of inequality or inequalities you are going to focus on and to identify your long term inequality reduction goal. This might be quite broad - reduce inequalities in health – or very specific – reduce loneliness among older people. To decide which long term goal to focus on, you could start by considering:

  • the inequalities you identified as the most pressing to reduce, when you established the facts about inequality through applying the MIF
  • what is realistically achievable with the time and resources available
  • the areas in which you have some expertise

For example, you might prioritise seeing all girls in your country being able to go to school until they are at least 14; or to increase the share of people with disabilities in positions of political power; or a reduction in hate crimes committed against ethnic minorities; or to reduce social gradients in mental health; or to reduce concentrations of wealth.

Your goal is the long term reduction in specific inequalities, and the remaining steps set out in the diagram set out how to achieve this long term goal.
